Anaesthesia is an eight-episode series set in a familiar hospital, with an engaging conflict arc. The plot revolves around Dr. Dawid Lazarz, an accomplished neurosurgeon working at a prestigious hospital in a major Polish city. Known for his extraordinary medical abilities and confidence, Lazarz has built a reputation for handling complicated cases. However, his confidence sometimes turns into arrogance, and his willingness to ignore established procedures creates friction with colleagues and hospital authorities. His career takes a dramatic turn following a particularly difficult operation that fails. The consequences cost him his position at the hospital and force him to accept a position at a provincial medical facility. Accustomed to working with advanced resources and a respected professional team, Lazarz suddenly finds himself in a hospital with different priorities, limited resources, and an established workplace culture that does not welcome his methods.
This change of setting provides the series with its central source of drama. Lazarz may have exceptional surgical skills, but his new colleagues are not automatically impressed by his reputation. He must find a way through unfamiliar professional relationships, local hospitals, and the expectations of a medical institution that operates very differently from the one he knew previously.
When it comes to the cast, Leszek Lichota is a strong choice for a leading role. He brings the necessary authority to a character who needs to be both impressive and frustrating. Lazarz is not designed to be a conventional heroic doctor. His intelligence and determination make him valuable, but his lack of humility can make him a difficult person to work with. The interesting question is whether his unconventional approach genuinely benefits patients or whether his confidence prevents him from recognizing his own mistakes. The rest of the cast, including Karolina Gruszka, Aleksandra Popławska, Dorota Kolak, and Masza Wagrocka, adds further depth to the hospital environment. Their character help create a wider world in which medical decisions affect not only patients but also the relationships and careers of the people responsible for treating them.
Director Lukasz Ostalski approaches the story through a combination of medical drama and character- driven storytelling. There is a lot of character building that takes place from the first episode till the very last. That makes the narrative very intriguing to watch. A show like this should always have good character building. Without that, the plot feels incomplete, but thankfully the makers have not deprived us of that.
For viewers who enjoy medical dramas with morally complicated protagonists, workplace tensions, and serious questions about professional responsibility, Anaesthesia looks like a good watch. It is heavy, no doubt, but sometimes you need to watch shows like these to get a break from all the light-hearted watches. One thing that also needs to be warned off is that this being a medical drama, you will get to see some gruesome scenes without which I feel shows like Anaesthesia remain incomplete. If you are okay with watching, then of course there are no issues. If not, then it is better to reconsider your choice.
Final Score- [8/10]
