If you have been keeping up with Last Seen, you already know the amount of suspense that has been created so far. We have seen how the discovery of a child’s remains in the first episode puts Ian into a frenzy. Then we saw that in episode 2 there was a possibility that his daughter might actually be alive. And this is what forms the basis of episode 3. Now, Ian isn’t investigating a cold case anymore. He is of the firm belief that he has found some sort of connection to his lost daughter, and thus his evidence gets mixed with hopes. A mysterious phone call makes things even more intriguing. Ian knows that the voice belongs to Maggie, but we, the audience, are shown no definitive proof of who that voice belongs to. Now we have reached a point in the plot where we are constantly wondering what is going to happen next. In the first two episodes, we saw that Ian thinks that Sarah could be Maggie, which makes the plot highly personal rather than investigative. In episode 3, we see that the makers have moved beyond Ian’s investigation to explore the consequences of his growing suspicion. This also means that if Ian gets closer to Sarah, the Reids (the family Sarah lives with) might have to respond. But the question is, will this happen in the upcoming episodes? And most of episode 3 deals with answering the question that Ian has: is Sarah and Maggie the same person?
One thing that is for sure is that the makers have made this into a slow-burning drama, which is not sluggish either. From the first episode to now, we have seen how, piece by piece, the makers have established the plot. One after the other, scenes are coming up, and we are seeing what is happening. Now the plot is no longer revolving around Ian and his grief over losing a child. Now, it has become more about Ian trying to find out what exactly happened and how his child ended up at someone else’s home for so many years. This is what is slowly and steadily adding to the intrigue that we get to see. Since episode 3 was more or less about the investigation part, I am of the firm belief that the upcoming episodes will be about the results of his findings. And mind you, that too will be interesting to watch.
I also love the fact that the makers of Last Seen have maintained that continuity between the episodes. Everything is interconnected, and no scene jumps out of nowhere. There is a flow that we see, and that is the best part. It helps us to retain things well and properly. This also means that we are given enough time to get a grasp of things. I hope that this is exactly how things continue with Last Seen in the upcoming episodes, and we can have a thriller that is amazing.
