Although the plot of Take Charge of My Heart may seem familiar, you'll instantly fall in love with it when you start watching. The plot follows Baek Ho-rang, a wealthy chaebol heir whose life depends on an artificial heart that runs on a battery. However, that heart is slowly and steadily failing. His medical condition complicates his responsibilities at TS Group, where no one seems to understand his vulnerability. Meanwhile, Gong Bo-bae has spent 30 years struggling to find love, her mysterious electrical powers making dating very unusual. But that is the catch. Bo-bae's abilities can recharge Ho-rang’s artificial heart, and in the most unexpected manner, their lives have become intertwined.
What soon started off as a practical arrangement develops into something complicated. Their circumstances push them into a contract relationship, which gives us viewers opportunities for awkward encounters, misunderstandings, and the inevitable realization that there is something more to their bond.
On many accounts, the plot feels absurd and familiar. Absurd because we have a character who has an artificial heart and a woman whose main job is to keep it running. On many accounts, this can feel weird to watch instead of unique. However, the makers have created it well. So one doesn’t mind watching it. For us, we should just take it as any other fantasy plot and not relate actual medical science to it.
Then again, when we speak of familiarity of this kind of plot, Take Charge of My Heart is not behind. In the past, we have seen narratives that have characters who are enemies, then get into a contract relationship and finally fall in love. I believe it is high time that we should move on from such narratives. The only good thing is that the makers made this particular storyline worth a watch. The way they have approached the familiar territory is amazing. And if the show is well made, who cares if things are similar or seen before? As long as you enjoy watching plots like these, the day is made.
The pacing of the show is good. The makers have ensured not to stretch Take Charge of My Heart too much. In just ten episodes, the show wraps up. So when it comes to narrative, the makers have not really stretched anything. Everything gets over within the stipulated time. Even the speed of the scenes is moderate and mostly fast. They haven’t slowed down much, which makes it even better to watch.
Coming to the cast, it is the cast that makes you fall in love with the characters of Take Charge of My Heart. They all bring a certain level of innocence and vulnerability in themselves that, in return, makes it a sweet watch. Kin Young-kwang as Ho-rang brings a next level of tenderness. He shows us what personal struggles can be, and it has come out very beautifully on screen.
Chae Soo-bin as Bo-bae is also a sweet treat to watch on screen. Her character is filled with kindness and a happy-go-lucky persona. Again, just like her male counterpart, she has done a wonderful job in portraying the role. If you are someone who is into romance, Take Charge of My Heart is just what you need to watch.
Final Score- [7/10]
