‘Aileen: Queen of the Serial Killers’ (2025) Netflix Review - A Well-Made Documentary

From childhood abuse to death-row revelations, this documentary talks about the life of serial killer Aileen Wuornos.

Movies Reviews

This was by far the saddest story I have ever seen. The documentary covers the life and story of Aileen Wuornos. She became infamous for committing seven murders in the span of twelve months, which she claimed were an act of self-defence. Her childhood was also very sad, with her teenage mother abandoning her and her brother and leaving them to their abusive grandparents. Her brother passed away due to cancer, and she left her house. Soon, she married a much older man, but the marriage didn’t last long. However, as fate would have it, she met Tyria Moore, a motel maid. Aileen fell madly in love with her. She then undertook prostitution to support both of them financially. It is during this time that she ended up killing men. When arrested, she said everything was an act of self-defence. It was Tyria who worked with the police and got a confession out of Aileen regarding the murders. Her cellmates claimed that Aileen was mentally unwell. Some also say that her traumatic childhood was the result of all the murders. In the later years of her life, till her execution, Tyria was out of Aileen’s life, and up until the very last day, Aileen was in love with her.

The documentary is fully created on the archived footage of trials, interviews, and investigations of people involved in the case, as well as herself. This makes the entire watch very intriguing. We are shown the pictures of the victims and how the murders took place. But the most ground-breaking part of the documentary comes when we are shown the courtroom clip where the phone call between Tyria and Aileen is played. It is revealed that in the conversation, Aileen agrees to confess her doings in order to protect Tyria. Such was her love for Tyria.
Keeping aside the documentary, it is just sad how life turned out for Aileen. Her beginning was sad, and so was the rest of her life. Indeed, it is an unfortunate story to watch, and if you are someone who gets triggered due to murders, then this might not be for you.

But for those of you who like watching this genre, this documentary is indeed a great watch for you. It covers her story in great detail and shows us some of the most crucial interviews given by her. This helps us to listen to her side of the plot, too. Apart from that, her former inmates also come forward to talk us through her life with them. The makers have done an excellent job in showcasing her entire life, unbiased. They have left it on us to see Aileen from the vision we wish to see. When makers portray someone with that view, you can guarantee that the documentary is a great watch. They have gone to the extent of getting footage of when she was injected to death.

All these factors make “Aileen: Queen of the Serial Killers” a well-made documentary. So, as I mentioned before, for those of you who are into this genre, go ahead and watch it in order to gain great insights into her story.
