Badak is also a movie that I felt was highly underrated and rightly so. The plot revolves around a man named Badak (played by Shaheizy Sam), a deaf man who has spent most of his life raising his daughter Mirah (played by Aida Amron). Their household is filled with love and laughter, even as the two navigate a life filled with silence. However, life isn’t as easy as one might think for them. Mirah works with her father in a small burger stall and has a dream of becoming a hip-hop singer. As she finds her way to that journey, we see the harmony between the father and the daughter fading away. For Mirah, life is slowly becoming something that is filled with music. However, her father can’t hear the life she is about to live. And that is a beautiful juxtaposition that comes along the way. We have a daughter who is dependent on music and a father who cannot hear the voice that the entire world hears. That is the plot “Badak” follows. It shows us the journey that these two have and how they try not to lose themselves and each other in that.
As I mentioned before, this was a beautiful plot without a doubt. The way the makers have collided two contrasting worlds is worth a watch for sure. It is beautiful in its own way, and in order to understand its beauty, one must watch this amazing movie.
What stands out the most is the acting done by the cast. by Shaheizy Sam as Badak steals the show. He comes across as someone who is reserved but opens up easily to his daughter. That protective side of a father, and also another side of the same character, where he is not able to understand his daughter, has been brought out so beautifully by Shaheizy Sam. Even Aida Amron, who plays Mirah, comes across as a great actress. She has done a great job too in telling us the story of a daughter born to a deaf father, but who has high dreams. Together, their father-daughter relationship feels as natural as any real-life father-daughter relationship you have seen. All the elements of the same have been added in the movie and have been portrayed well by everyone involved.
It is high on emotions and well-paced. That is a plus point. Many times, movies with such a plot become boring to watch if they aren’t well-paced. Thankfully, this wasn’t the case with Badak, as the makers gave us a good-paced plot where every emotion is deeply felt through an absolute cinematic portrayal. Other than that, even the character development is good as we get to see both the characters coming out beautifully, trying to understand each other’s worlds. Director Raihan Halim has given us a great mid-week watch until the weekend comes. So if you are looking to have a quick yet fruitful watch, Badak is the movie for you.
Final Score- [8/10]
