Vietnamese movie Bunny starts off with a host of a show, Hải Linh, talking to a camera held by her husband and lovingly saying things related to their life together. On camera, it looks like everything is perfect between them. And they aren’t faking it. Her husband is actually an admirable person, taking care of her, or so it appears to the viewers. As a host, she advises people on how to have a successful love life. However, her carefully crafted image, which on the face of it appears to be polished, successful, and emotionally stable, begins to break when a mysterious guest appears on her show and starts to expose the cracks in her love life. This has a devastating impact on her career, but also gets the audience hooked to see the level of hiding she has been doing. What initially begins as a normal guest asking for advice soon turns into a darker psychological mystery, which is filled with manipulation and shocking revelations that spread shock waves to the audience. The question is: who is this guest? What does he have to do with Hải Linh and her husband? And most importantly, the main question is how does he know so much about her marriage? Over the due course of the run time, things start to become clear, and we understand the motive behind all this.
Right from the start of the first scene, the environment of the movie suggests that something is being hidden by the couple. That aroma of mystery is something you can sense right from the start. This palpitation is what makes Bunny! a gripping watch from beginning to end. There is a constant tussle of confrontation that starts once the guest arrives on the show. Along with the onscreen audience getting hooked, even we, the actual audience, will want to see more of what is about to happen in Hải Linh.
What works best is how the background of the movie has been developed. The scenes are shot wonderfully with an air of suspense constantly roaming around. You can already sense that something is about to happen. But even with all this, there are too many twists and turns, which makes the plot a very confusing watch. At one point, you will lose track of what was happening when. Sadly, what once created curiosity is the same thing that will play with your mind. Some scenes are hard to understand. I am not sure if that’s how the makers wanted it to be. But clearly, this approach goes heavily against the plot. It is so hard to keep track of the new revelations, probably because they come one after the other constantly. By the time one starts to make sense of the plot, one will end up losing all interest in the plot.
The pacing is also a bit slow and highly uneven. The first half moves fast, and then the second half slows down. I don’t understand why that happened. And that is what adds to the confusion. But even with the flaws, Bunny! remains worth at least a watch. The makers have tried their level best to get things right and provide a plot with twists. And for that reason, you can try to watch.
