Turning Point: Generation 9/11 is a documentary that examines the lasting impact of the terror act 25 years since the tragedy. The plot begins with the horrifying reality of 9/100. Archived footage shows how a clear blue sky was suddenly filled with smoke and fire. The recordings of distress calls capture the panic of the people trapped inside the World Trade Centre. While we all know what happened, every time you watch anything related, it breaks your heart. Memories from survivors and relatives of the victims add a deeply personal aspect that none of us saw before. What breaks the heart even more are the final phone calls made by people who knew that they might die. So yes, a warning beforehand: Turning Point: Generation 9/11 is a painful watch. Even if you aren’t related, the whole watching experience is indeed sad. Once this part is shown, the makers go on to show us the examination of what happened in the years post the attack. As per the makers, the legislation of Authorization for Use of Military Force (AUMF) gave the US president broad powers to respond to terrorism. Somehow, this became a justification for many military actions that went beyond the scope of cracking down on al-Qaida. Along with all this, a lot of spotlight is thrown on conspiracy theories. Even though social media wasn’t developed that much, many theories came up which have also been well examined in Turning Point: Generation 9/11.
What is interesting is that the film focuses on people who were born shortly after the attacks. They share what it is like to grow up with an inherited memory when, in reality, they didn’t really witness them. So yes, a lot of things have been shown and examined well. It is indeed a deep analysis of many aspects of 9/11 that weren’t done before. As we approach the 25th anniversary of the attack, one cannot help but go back to all the chaos that followed. Documentaries like these are important to ensure that the coming generation is educated about what took place and to never take sacrifices for granted. Not only that, but the relation of the attacks was also traced to the 2021 evacuation from Afghanistan. Turning Point: Generation 9/11 will surely make you think about everything once the credits begin to roll out.
The pacing is brisk, and honestly, when you are intrigued, you won’t really bother much about it. So much information is presented, and with the pacing like that, you do get time to think and grasp it well.
Additionally, I also felt that Turning Point: Generation 9/11 is well researched. Nothing that is shown here isn’t well corroborated with facts and interviews. Archived footage of people who were impacted adds volumes to what is shown to us. That amounts to a lot of weightage in maintaining the authenticity of what is being displayed. But yes, like I said before, watching this isn’t easy. You will be left sad, and the memories of those who are gone in this attack will stay in your mind.
