For those who enjoy crime thrillers and watching them, “City of Shadows” is a quick watch. The plot revolves around Inspector Milo Malart, a former detective whose career ended due to a scandal and a turbulent personal life.  But Milo refuses to give up. He finds himself getting drawn again and again to his duty where he once served. And that is because of this one horrific case, which he learns from. To solve this, he partners with Deputy Inspector Rebeca Garrido, a sharp and determined officer who has her own struggles. This case leads them to explore the underworld of Barcelona’s crime world. Now here is the thing. The case is not a simple one. It is about a ritualistic meeting. Together, these two have to find answers to some of the very burning questions as they face mounting pressure from the media and public. Will they succeed in finding the answers? Or is this the end of Milo’s career and interest once and for all?

So the topic of ritualistic killings is very interesting. And the plot, which revolves around investigating the same, makes for a very intriguing storyline. The show is short with only six episodes lasting approximately forty minutes each. This makes the entire show worth watching. However, what goes against the show is the pacing. Somewhere, it has uneven pacing, which makes the show a bit annoying. But given how good the plot is, one can always ignore the sluggish pacing.

What I also loved was the character development. Many times, we watch a show or a story where the main focus is on the storyline. However, here the main focus was also on the characters. We are shown the personal struggles that follow the lives of our two main characters. Nowhere do they have it easy. Even in the investigation, they have been keeping up with the struggles of their lives. And in a true sense, that is exactly what makes the show worth a great watch.

Also, we must take time to appreciate how they made the city a character in itself. Barcelona has a lot to add to the show as it explores the underworld crime of the city. The landmarks and the overall aesthetic of Barcelona show up beautifully throughout the show.

Yes, a lot of things are very predictable in it. But since that is just the procedural aspects of it, you can, for once, ignore them and focus just on the plot. Even the cast of the show does a great job. Isak Férriz and Verónica Echegui give us the best characters through their acting. Their display of emotions accurately makes us want to watch the show. For sure, they are one of the main reasons why one should watch it.

However, some things can make someone very comfortable due to the killings and graphics around them. So for those reasons, one should be careful when making a decision to watch the show. But if that doesn’t bother you, you can watch without hesitation.

Final Score- [7/10]
