For Asuka Kunimi, life isn’t easy. Her mother is suffering from cancer, and they are estranged from his father. Her father was an ace shogi player. He used to win every title and was famous until he met his dull phase, where he struggled to win titles. This meant the family was going to have tough days ahead. Auska, too, as a child, was motivated by her father and was even the winner of the shogi children’s category. But with her father’s continuous loss, he started becoming violent. He forgot his own family and made shogi his life, which led to resentment from Asuka. But can you blame her? Ultimately, her father abandons her and her mother when his losing streak continues. It is disheartening to see her mother and herself trying to convince her father not to abandon them, but all in vain. Fast forward to adult life, her childhood left a big impact on adult Asuka, who is now taking care of her mother. Doing odd jobs to make ends meet, she sees that her father’s biography and her mother’s condition have worsened. Her mother, on the other hand, is longing for the family to get back together as her final wish. However, her father has long forgotten them and even remarried. Sadly, her mother’s final wish remains unfulfilled. And thus began the saga of Asuka, formerly a sweet little girl, whose childhood was ended by her own father. She decides to take revenge on him. But the question is, will she succeed?
With just the first episode being released, I am glad the makers thought it through. Instead of randomly showing us the plotting of revenge, they first chose to show us why Asuka is hell bent on taking revenge on her father. The first episode goes just into the flashback, which is very much needed for the show to set the track right. As I liked how every bit of her childhood is shown, right from a happy family to a broken one, once her father starts losing the game. The selfishness of this man is shown to the core, which makes us feel his pain. The death of her mother leaves her an orphan. However, I am sure there is more to her father’s life than what was shown to us in the first episode. His father’s second marriage may have had an impact on his career. However, this is just an assumption I am making.
The pacing is perfect because not once do you feel bored when the flashback is shown. Even the amalgamation of both times is shown so finely that you won’t get confused with the timelines at all. It would be interesting to see when this estranged father-daughter duo faces each other because that would be a sight to behold. So, viewers, this could be a potentially great watch from the first episode. You can watch it if you are someone who is into revenge dramas. The thrill is yet to set in, but brace yourselves for a great watch.
Final Score- [8/10]
