No Tail to Tell was one of the most anticipated shows. However, the first episode didn’t leave quite the mark I was looking for. The plot revolves around Eun-ho (played by Kim Hye-yoon), who is a nine-tailed fox, also known as gumiho, in Korean folklore. Now I know most of you know the traits of a gumiho, but those of you who are encountering this term for the first time, here is a bit of extra information regarding the same. One of the most notable traits of a gumiho involves its ability to become human for a short duration on Earth after performing good deeds. However, Eun-ho is different. She doesn’t want to become a human. So she does what she likes: she enjoys like a human, but avoids doing kind work for others in order to avoid becoming a human forever. Over time, Eun-ho has mastered these abilities. She knows what is to be done and how it is to be done. All in all, she is having the time of her life. That is when Kang Si-yeol (played by Lomon) comes into the picture. He is a successful soccer star who has created his life based on discipline and routine, the key ingredient that every sportsperson requires. At this point, the makers want us to see a sharp contrast in the lives of these two. One is filled with spontaneity and magic, while the other is mortal. How will their path cross? Well, this might come as a shocker, but Eun-ho loses her abilities to continue as a Gumiho, which ends up making her a full-time human. This also means that now she has to deal with daily life and daily emotions that come her way, not to mention that she will be dealing with Si-yeol as well. How will these two carry on?
To be honest, as I already mentioned, I was hoping for a better show. This plot is awfully confusing and very boring. I have rarely seen such a plot in KDramas. But here we are. The makers could have made a better plot. Generally, the first episode is enough to gauge the viewer’s interest. But this show fails to do the same. They have tried to add elements to make it nice, like a typical love story between the leads, but even then, the plot doesn’t come out that well.
In the past, we have all seen many good gumiho-related dramas such as “Tail of Nine Tailed”. Those dramas had an air of mystery and a full dose of romance. However, this show falters big time in giving us that.
In addition to all this, the pacing is very slow. That can irritate you to the core. At first glance, I had no idea what I was seeing when we went back in history. And even after a few minutes, the situation remained the same, with the pacing adding to the annoyance. Honestly, I hate shows that aren’t easy to understand. After a hard day, all one would want is to watch something that is nice and easy. Most kdramas serve that. But I was very disappointed with No Tail to Tell. In every sense, the show lives up to its name because, yes, they have no tale to tell.
Final Score- [3/10]
