Nothing to Lose starts with a devastating hook that manages to capture your attention instantly. Built around every parent's nightmare, the plot revolves around a mother who goes to every extent possible to save her son once he is diagnosed with leukemia. For Jada, life has never been easy. After years of struggling with infertility, she eventually becomes a mother via embryo donation. This makes her believe that she has left the hardest part of life behind her. However, her life is shattered once again when she discovers that her son Noa is suffering from an aggressive form of leukemia, which requires an urgent bone marrow transplant. Facing a system that doesn't move fast, Jada reaches a point in her life where she must make hard decisions even if it means challenging her own morality and the law.
There are many good things about Nothing to Lose. The first and foremost being the heartbreak a parent suffers upon discovering something so serious. Her struggles have been well developed in the plot, and it feels so real when we watch Nawell Madani portray the character. There is pain in Jada's character: first upon experiencing infertility and second upon discovering that her child is suffering. The entire plot of Nothing to Lose is from her point of view, which makes you realize what many parents undergo when their child is suffering. Again, you will experience heartache when you see her struggle to find a bone marrow donor for her son and how, time and again, the system fails her. At this point, we don't see a woman; we see a mother rushing against time to do whatever it takes to save her son. So the entire channel of helplessness is well captured and presented to us through storytelling, acting, and the overall plot.
Nawell Madani remains the star of the film. The way she plays the role of the mother makes us believe that whatever is happening with her is wrong. At one point, it is hard to understand where the character ends and the real person starts. She carries the entire plot on her shoulders, which is the best part of all of this. Even the background set adds depth to Nothing to Lose. The hospital setup production resonates well with whatever is being shown. To a great extent, a lot of seriousness is added to the plot because of the background.
The second half, however, feels a bit abrupt. The plot suddenly becomes a thriller, showing how far Jada is willing to go for her son. Though essential, some parts of it feel strange and a bit forced. Maybe this is where the overall storytelling should have become better with all that is being shown to us. The character development is great, but sometimes it fails to complement the overall plot.
The pacing also struggles a lot in the second half. A lot of it is dragged for no reason whatsoever. Yes, we understand Jada's feelings, but after a while, things could have been wrapped up rather gracefully. Yet that doesn't really happen. Overall, Nothing to Lose is a one-time watch for those wanting to watch a mix of emotions and thriller.
