Amazon's Sci-Fi thriller series, ‘The Rig’ is returning for a second season to uncover the mysteries that it left at the end of Season 1. The Rig has been renewed for Season 2 almost a month after the first season was released on January 6, 2023, on Prime Video.

The Rig Season 1 began as a character-driven mystery thriller that follows the Kinloch Bravo oil rig crew as they fight for survival after a mysterious fog cuts off all communication with the land and leaves them isolated in the North Sea's ferocious waves. MAGNUS, the Offshore Installation Manager (OIM) and rig leader, tries to lead his already divided staff through the unfolding crisis as their helicopter fails to arrive. His increasingly desperate attempts to reconnect with the mainland, however, are constantly thwarted as tensions and paranoia rise, the rig's systems fail, and a horrific disaster brings them all face to face with the grave dangers of one of the world's most hazardous working environments.

ROSE, a Pictor Energy Company representative, is skeptical of the crew's frightening theories about what's going on outside, but she's eager to get everyone back to work and keep the oil flowing. Her scientific curiosity drives her to learn the truth about the supernatural forces arrayed against them as the evidence mounts. As loyalties are tested and alliances are formed and destroyed, we learn more about the crew's inner lives as they try to understand both the force they face and their place in a rapidly changing world. The past's sins weigh heavily here, and while the majority of the crew is desperate to return home, the path back is much less obvious for some. To make it out alive, they'll need bravery, heroism, sacrifice, and a confrontation with the consequences of the paths that led them here. When the crew realizes the magnitude of the force they've unleashed, they realize the greatest danger is not to them, but to everyone they've abandoned on land.

The first season ended with the survivors leaving the Oil Rig on rescue helicopters as the Rig gets destroyed by high-rise waves (Tsunami) which completely dismantle it. But the crew has no idea where they are leaving for as Coake tells the crew they are not going to the beach. The Tsunami also affected the world beyond the sea in which they were working and it seems there is hardly anything left. In short, the series ended on a big cliffhanger, keeping the fate of the world a mystery.

The second season is likely to delve into the world outside the Rig and will try to solve the mystery of the creatures responsible for it. It will be interesting to see if Calvin Demba's Baz has anything left to do after his unnecessary sacrifice in the final moments of the show. Did the mysterious Dust protect Baz from dying and took him somewhere else through the portal? Where are the helicopters going to land if there is no land left anywhere, is it another oil rig?

Created By David Macpherson, the cast of the six-episode first season stars Iain Glen, Emily Hampshire, Martin Compston, Calvin Demba, Owen Teale, Richard Pepple, Mark Bonnar, Molly Vevers, Mark Addy, Rochenda Sandall, Nikhil Parmar, Emun Elliott, Stuart McQuarrie, Abraham Popoola, and Cameron Fulton. John Strickland and Derek Wax are the executive producers, and Wild Mercury Productions is the production company behind this series. ‘The Rig’ is directed by John Strickland and Alex Holmes.

The Rig Season 2 is currently planning to begin production in the Summer of 2023 at First Stage Studios in Edinburgh, Scotland. Read our The Rig Season 1 Review.
