This has to be one of the most unsettling watches for the week. The three-part documentary revisits one of the most disturbing crimes- the brutal murder of four students of the University of Idaho in November 2022. For those of you who do not know what happened, here’s a quick summary: Madison Mogen, Kaylee Goncalves, Xana Kernodle, and Ethan Chapin, the four students, were fatally stabbed inside their off-campus home in Moscow, Idaho. The investigation led to Bryan Kohberger, who later pleaded guilty and ended up receiving four consecutive life sentences without parole. What makes The Idaho Murders: College Nightmare authentic is how they have shown us never-before-seen materials. Police bodycam footage, videos, text messages, and interviews of the investigators and family members add weight to the credibility of the documentary. There is a sense of fear and confusion that the makers have maintained in order to make us feel what truly happened and what was felt. Friends and family come forward to share more about the victims, creating a sense of belonging as you watch. They tell us how the victims were in real life, their dreams and aspirations, etc. At one point, your heart will go out for these people and their family. While watching, the loss of young, talented college students will hit you too.

In no way have the makers tried to sensationalize the show. Yes, there is a murder, but with utmost sensitivity, the entire incident is presented to us. The makers have walked us through the process of collecting evidence such as DNA analysis, cellphone records, witness testimonies, etc. This will increase your respect for those who are involved in the whole process.

In addition to all of the above, The Idaho Murders: College Nightmare also sheds light on another aspect that is hardly ever shown to us. This includes the conspiracy theories and loads of social media speculation. When the murders took place, a majority of internet users were obsessed with trying to solve the case. As a result, it became less about the victims and more about a mystery that needed to be solved by the netizens. But even while covering this side, the makers have ensured to keep it more in an educational tone rather than going overboard with presenting it as some dramatic sub-event.

The sole reason why The Idaho Murders: College Nightmare succeeds is because of its apt execution. As haunting as the real-life plot is, the makers have ensured that, when it reaches us, the audience, it comes across as purely unbiased. The gravity of the incident has been well studied and thoroughly researched. As a result, what we get is a well-created show that takes what it is presenting seriously. With brisk pacing packed with emotions and vulnerability, the documentary presents the truth in “as it is” form.  This compassionate portrait of the lives lost is one of the best tributes the victims can truly get. That is why we must watch it and understand what this case was truly all about.

Final Score - [8/10]
