I must say, the concept of this documentary caught my attention and also took me by surprise. Most of us might assume from the title that The Plastic Detox talks about reducing plastic in the environment and how it is harmful to us. But that is not what this documentary is about.

At the heart of the film is Dr. Shanna Swan, whose research on reproductive health has drawn global attention to the connection between the declining rate of fertility and plastic-derived chemicals. We are shown six couples from America who are struggling to conceive and agree to become a part of this experiment: for the next three months, they agree to eliminate plastic completely from their lives.  The results of the same are tracked in two aspects: scientifically, as well as emotionally. The main concept that the makers wanted to show us was the impact of microplastics and their involvement in our day-to-day lives. But the question is, are fertility rates really dropping due to plastic? And this is what the documentary tries to answer for us.

To give a bit of a heads up, this is a very medically oriented documentary. Some might find the experiment engaging, the rest might not. However, it does make you plastic conscious, in the sense that you might think at least once about the usage of plastic. And that is what is advocated throughout the documentary- to stop completely or mindfully using plastic. You might find some answers to the question that this documentary raises: research provided in this documentary states that micro particles carry chemicals such as phthalates and bisphenols, which can cause endocrine disruptions. This, in turn, interferes with the hormone system and also results in a failing sperm count. How much of this is true is for us to decide after watching The Plastic Detox.

But here is the good part: instead of showing us merely stats and crowding our brains with numbers, the makers chose a rather clever way: use a real-life experiment to conclude. That, I believe, has indeed left a good impact as we are shown in great depth what the experiment is about, how to understand the results, and see what is happening throughout. We are also shown how and why plastic came into existence in the first place, and how, apart from the environment, even our daily lives can be negatively impacted by it.

As I noted earlier, though The Plastic Detox stands out as a polished and enlightening documentary, it may not captivate those who lack interest in health and medical matters. That said, even if you're in that camp, I'd still encourage you to view it and soak up its insights. The director's effort and meticulous groundwork are plainly visible across the film's entire length.

Another good thing about The Plastic Detox is that you won’t be left hopeless about the future. You will, instead, be shown the solutions that can be applied in real life for you to have a healthier lifestyle. Hence, this is indeed a well-balanced documentary and can be watched.

Final Score- [7/10]
