Tawan is obsessed with finding the woman who appears in his dreams. What happens when he meets Mint?

Movies Reviews

Her in Frame is a Thai romantic mystery that explores the fascinating connection between memory, photography, dreams, and the love of people who leave lasting impressions on us and our lives. The plot follows a young photographer, Tawan, who increasingly gets fascinated by an old photograph and the mysterious woman connected to it.  His curiosity leads him to Mint, a textile museum curator. As Tawan attempts to make sense of the photograph’s significance, his interest develops into an obsession that takes him across Thailand. All along the way, memories, dreams, and real-life encounters start to overlap, which leaves him uncertain about what he is experiencing and what the photograph is trying to reveal.

There are both good and bad things about Her in Frame. One of the most compelling elements is the use of photography as a narrative device. A photograph ordinarily captures a fleeting moment which later acts as a preservation of place or an expression. In this movie, however, the image becomes much more than a record of the past. It acts as a bridge between different moments in time, which encourages Tawan to question the relationship between what has already happened and what continues to influence the present that he lives in. This arch gives the story a dreamlike outlook, which also acts as a foundation for the mystery on which the film is based.

The character of Tawan is well developed. He is shown as a man who is determined to understand what lies behind the photograph and gradually becomes more complicated as his personal experiences begin to shape his interpretation. All of this becomes clear right from the first few scenes when he doesn’t let go of the woman who comes in his dreams. On the other hand, Mint serves as an important figure on whom the overall mystery is based. As a textile museum curator, she is connected to objects that preserve history and personal stories. It is thus safe to say that the makers indeed chose her profession wisely. The connection between Tawan’s photography and Mint’s profession creates an appealing contrast that brings together two different ways of preserving the past.

Now coming to the parts that didn’t quite really work out. The makers used enough hidden details that could make any viewer get confused. Some of us might not be able to join the dots. While the love story is cute and sweet, much of our time goes into trying to figure out what is actually happening.

The pacing of Her in Frame is another big issue. The plot moves at an incredibly slow pace; much of it can disrupt the viewing experience. In the first few scenes, the pacing was fine. Most of the important characters were introduced well on time. However, as the scenes begin to progress, you will realize that the plot is too slow. So all in all, while the concept of Her in Frame is a good one and something new about retelling the plot of falling in love, the execution of the same falters a lot. If you are in wanting to watch something sweet, this is your movie. However, be ready for some bumps along the way.
