Apple TV ‘Dark Matter’ Season 2 Episode 1 Review - Running for Life from Life

The concept of running away is certainly different in Dark Matter. For one reason, Jason is running away from Jason, and the other thing I don't understand is why Jason and Family can't try to skip the country instead of hopping off dimensions. After the chaotic ending of the first season, the second season opens the day after the battle at Jason’s ancestral home. Bodies of numerous identical Jasons have been collected at a local police station; investigators have no explanation. At least a few Jasons survived. One of them (the “Beanie Jason” variant) is being questioned when Agent Mitchel MacNamara (Chris Diamantopoulos) takes over the case. He is not a conventional cop or federal agent—he works out of black sites—and treats the situation with blunt menace, including threats involving an autopsy table and claims of holding other Jasons. The surviving Jason offers to lead him to another version of himself.

In the first episode, "A Quiet Life," Some time has passed since the family fled their original world. Jason 1, Daniela, and Charlie have settled in a secluded cottage in a reality where almost no one knows them. They have a firearm in the cupboard, a safe word (“patience”) to confirm identity, and a fragile routine. Jason leaves for work; Daniela plans to handle a roof leak later. An unknown Jason arrives looking for Daniela. She stalls him until Jason 1 is due home, but the visitor becomes aggressive. Daniela shoots him in the chest. Jason 1 returns; they confirm identities with the safe word, clean up, and Jason buries the body. Officer Jay Stringer soon appears investigating an abandoned stolen vehicle tied to their address. He notices blood, finds the body, and attempts an arrest. The couple overpower him and flee, knowing backup is coming. They collect Charlie and enter the Box. Charlie, after months of this life, demands a fuller explanation and then joins them.

Inside the corridor, they focus on finding a world without versions of themselves, fame, or criminal records. One jump lands them in a tornado-ravaged Chicago; they retreat quickly. Another takes them to a hotel they hoped would be low-profile. The next morning they discover they are well-known in a heavy-surveillance society and have to jump again.

Meanwhile, in a polite, seemingly utopian world, Ryan tracks down Amanda 2. He explains that Jason 2 abandoned him and cut off his access to the Box. Amanda 2 recounts her time with Jason 1 and Jason 2’s betrayal. Ryan describes finding his sister Camilla after realizing the world had changed and recreating the corridor drug (Lilac/Lavender Wings) out of guilt and necessity. He also learns the Box has been moved. A surviving Leighton 2 approaches a calmer, yoga-teaching Leighton 3 (who may be using the same drug and presenting as a guru). Leighton 2 wants help navigating the multiverse more stably. Ryan and Amanda 2 reconnect at a public unveiling of the Box. The device is disconnected and unusable, stranding them. They begin considering building a life in this peaceful reality.

The Dessens’ search brings them to the same utopian world—the one where Jason 1 previously left Amanda 2. Jason recognizes it and is wary because of his history with Amanda 2 and the complications it could create with Daniela. The upside is the presence of another usable Box (the one that brought Ryan and Amanda 2 there is now obsolete). The episode leaves Ryan and Amanda 2 facing a choice: stay in the polite world or use the new Box, while the Dessens have just arrived in a place that is no longer isolated from other travelers.

Season 2 is an original continuation written by Blake Crouch (the novel’s author and the series showrunner) beyond the book. So I am pretty satisfied with the start of a fresh story that explores the multiverse while keeping the chaos intact. It gave me a feel that the story never ended and, just like infinite dimensions, there are infinite possibilities that can be explored. What I expect from the upcoming episodes is to explore a few new worlds where Jason is identical to Jason 1.
