If you are looking for a visual treat, Scarlet is the movie that serves you right. What begins as a fairytale of revenge slowly transforms into something way deeper. The plot revolves around Scarlet, a warrior princess who has seen nothing but violence growing up. Most of her life was consumed by her father’s death, which shaped her into a fighter that she became. And this is what the rest of the movie follows: battle scenes, swords swinging, and Scarlet fighting through it all. What makes Scarlet keep going all this time? The hatred she has developed after her father’s death.
What makes Scarlet different from every revenge movie you have seen is how revenge is portrayed. It is not the hatred that is glorified, but the cost that is shown to us. This adds depth to the overall plot. Post experiencing a failure in her mission, Scarlet finds herself wounded and is transported to a world realm that connects her to the modern world. That is where we see a shift in the overall tone of the film. We get to see a dreamlike environment and beautiful sky, making a subtle change to the environment. In this new setting, Scarlet meets a new man who changes her life for the better. This relationship can become predictable, but it is where clever writing on the part of screenwriters has come to picture. The makers have ensured that the plot doesn’t become something we already know. That is the best part.
Overall, the visuals are amazing. As mentioned earlier, the subtle shift in the scenes is well designed. This makes Scarlet worth a watch. But what stands out ultimately is how the script has been written. It is beautiful. There is revenge, there is affection, and there is a whole lot of bravery. This makes the plot stand out. Wherever things get heavy, some moments strike a balance between what we are shown. The plot is a mature one. So it requires your time to sit and understand. You can't be watching it just for the sake of it.
The pacing is fine. The plot doesn’t rush, nor does it slow down ever. It moves at a normal speed, which gives us enough time to grasp whatever is being shown to us. This complements the overall screenplay of the movie, which has multiple subplots. By doing so, the makers have ensured that the movie doesn’t appear to be confusing to those who are watching it.
Even the background score is worth a mention. The music directors have done a great job in creating music that goes hand in hand with the scenes. Not one score feels out of place with what has been displayed and used, all thanks to the music. So if you are someone who wants to watch a multiple-genre movie, Scarlet is your go-to watch. It is serious and entertaining, which honestly makes the whole experience a great one.
Final Score- [8/10]
