Apple TV ‘Dark Matter’ Season 2 Episode 7 Review - The Box and the Plague

Charlie meets a kind stranger, Blair warns Leighton, and Amanda and Ryan face an unknown horror. The episode splits those threads and treats the Box as something that can wreck whole worlds, not just individual lives.

In “The Pyramid,” Amanda and Ryan learn that another version of them brought the Black Iris Plague into a locked-down Chicago. Colonel Jay Stringer of the Great Lakes National Guard and CDC doctor Janet Sharp brief them on Hema Aetho 26, also called the Black Iris Plague: a fast-spreading illness with an extremely high fatality rate. Authorities first thought patient zero was Ryan’s sister, Camilla Holder. She had already been dead before the outbreak. The earliest infected traveler they can trace is another version of Ryan, who walked out of the Shikaakwa Park Box with a version of Amanda a few weeks before the pair we follow arrived. Amanda connects that to how the Corridor branches versions of people. This Ryan did not personally carry the virus, but another version of him did, and he still takes the blame.

The government does not understand superposition. They treat these two as the same people who somehow recovered, and they force tests on them in the hope of a cure, with a transfer planned for harsher interrogation. This world’s Leighton, whose company is investigating the park Box, breaks them out, gives them hazmat suits, and has an associate named Anthony get them close to the Box. He tells them to find another Leighton, ideally one in humanitarian medicine, bring back a cure, and return. They make it inside, but Amanda is hit with a tranquilizer dart and collapses as Ryan calls her name.

In the lower-tech world, Leighton shows Blair the Pyramid: a giant, industrial-scale Box, named partly for the idea of passage into another existence and partly for its adaptive shielding. His team, which includes another version of himself and Jason2, has catalogued 74 worlds—who went, when, and what technology each one has. Some of that tech built the Pyramid. A local Ryan is also working on a slow-release Lilac Wings patch that could keep a traveler dosed for about 30 days. It is large enough for trucks, equipment, or refugees. Leighton points to carbon scrubbers from another world that could repair a damaged atmosphere, and argues the machine could move the machines themselves, or evacuate people from a dying world. Blair immediately notes it could also move armies. The catch is power: it needs a nuclear source Leighton will not fully describe, and it only runs about 20 minutes before stranding anyone still on the other side.

Leighton treats Jason2’s arrival as fate and asks Blair to rejoin. She refuses. She says scaling the Box only multiplies consequences no one understands. She walks. Sandra, Leighton’s partner, orders Blair watched because she has now seen the whole project.

It is Charlie’s birthday. After about a day in the Corridor, bruised and asking only for help, Charlie lands inside the house of a woman named Laurel. The Box appeared in her home; she has hosted versions of Jason, Amanda, and others, adjusted the house for travelers, and keeps notebooks on them. She has never met a Charlie. She has not entered the Corridor herself. She tells him the people who navigate it successfully focus on a real memory of a person, not an imagined adult version of Max. Charlie barely remembers his twin—they were four when Max died—but he has a home video of the two of them laughing while Jason raked leaves. That becomes the anchor. He goes back in, calls out “It’s Charlie,” and lands on the line “I remember you.” The ending implies he has opened a world where Max lived. It does not confirm this is the same Max Jason met.

Daniela tells Gabriel that multiple Jasons revived an old fear: her biological father could be kind one moment and frightening the next, so love never felt stable. Gabriel still recognizes the person he helped raise, even though she is not his daughter, and tells her to go home and find Charlie. She leaves Jason a message and a note, finds the house empty, and enters the Box herself. She misses Jason by moments.

PI MacNamara confronts Jason with photos of the Box being taken apart and of this world’s Jason and Daniela in San Francisco. Jason doses his whiskey with Lilac Wings, walks him to the Box, and locks him in the Corridor. Once the compound wears off, MacNamara should be stranded. Jason gets home, misses Daniela’s note, and opens the door to Jason2—who, in the other plot, has been working with Leighton on the Pyramid and is apparently looking for a replacement for the role Blair refused.

“The Pyramid” is the busiest hour of Dark Matter Season 2 so far, and the strain shows. The episode rushes a plague outbreak, Leighton’s industrial-scale Box, Charlie’s search for Max, and Daniela’s chase into the Corridor all at once. The ideas land harder than the pacing: Blair’s warning that fear can destroy a world, and the Black Iris Plague as a multiverse consequence, give the sci-fi real weight.

Final Score - [8/10]
