We all know how chaotic weddings can be. And this chaos is what double happiness works on. A groom attempts to host two separate wedding banquets in the same hotel on the same day for his divorced parents to prevent them from crossing paths. Though this might sound like the beginning of a comedy of errors, which it is. Yet beneath all this, we can see some unresolved family wounds as well as emotional baggage that has been transferred down the generations. Tim, the groom, is a talented hotel chef who has planned everything in order to marry his fiancée, Daisy. We are shown how his parents cannot stand each other. Instead of choosing one parent over the other, Tim comes up with the plan to conduct two separate weddings, which also leads to misunderstandings and big logistical issues. Tim tried his level best to ensure things worked smoothly, be it juggling the railway stations or creating excuses to see either of the parents.
Without a doubt, the whole film is what provides a lot of laughter amongst people. Watching Tim struggle generates plenty of comedic moments. But even in all this, you do feel a certain kind of pity for him. Even though he is an adult, we can see a child of separated parents trying his level best to love and honour both of them instead of just picking and choosing one of them. That is one of the most bittersweet moments that one can find in Double Happiness. This also adds a sense of a certain emotional layer in the plot, which breaks the monotony of comedy, which forms the central theme of the plot.
Another thing that works great in the movie is the character development of Tim. More than Daisy, it is his role that shows the internal struggles of children who belong to this kind of family. Through flashbacks, we see how he is always in a tussle to help and please others, especially his parents. By the time the plot wraps up, you can see the remarkable change in Tim. Even the arches of his parents have been well developed. We can see how they finally start to understand their son.
The only issue with Double Happiness is how presitbale the plot is. Mind-way, amidst all the comedy, one can understand where the plot is heading, which leaves no interest in watching the rest of the remaining parts. There aren't many twists and turns that the makers have added for us to guess. That is an issue because the audience who has anticipated the ending knows what is going to happen and can lose interest.
The pacing is even. In some parts, it does get a bit slow. The rest of it, the pacing is even, which makes the whole watching experience a good one. That is important for comedy; otherwise, no one would want to watch it. So if you are someone who can ignore the shortcomings of Double Happiness, you will find plenty to watch and laugh at.
Final Score- [7/10]
