As the name suggests, The Map of Longing is a plot that focuses on how people learn to move on after a loss that shatters their lives. This is a difficult watch for sure, but you won’t regret it. The plot follows the life of Greta, a young woman whose life has revolved only around caring for her older sister Lucy, who suffers from leukemia.  Her life changes forever when Lucy dies unexpectedly. Before passing away, Lucy leaves behind one final gift- a game called The Map of Longing. Every challenge in the game pushes Greta outside of her comfort zone instead of going back into a cocoon. In between all this, she crosses paths with Will, a man carrying emotional scars from his past of his own. Together, they start a journey of healing.

What stands out the most about The Map of Longing is how they portrayed the grief of both Lucy and Will. One might think that doing so might make the plot quite overdramatic. But no, that isn’t what happens. Instead, subtly and maturely, they have shown such a heavy theme and totally done full justice to it.

Another great thing about the whole show is the cast. Alícia Falcó delivers a strong and compelling performance as Greta. There are so many nuances to her character; each of them has been portrayed in a very tactful manner. That makes the whole character worth a watch. The way she delivers dialogue and her acting is top-notch. Pablo Álvarez as Will complements the character of Greta well, which is exactly what is needed. Together, both the main leads make The Map of Longing a wonderful watch. There is pain in the characters, and the actors do full justice to take it out on us.

For me, the best part was how grief was not just a theme. Rather, it was a character of its own. Grief is travelling through Greta and Will, which also shows us how different people handle grief differently. Doing so isn’t as easy as it might look, but once you watch it, you understand.

The only issue I found that many people will agree with is the pacing. The pacing is too slow. Yes, but having said that, one has to remember that a plot like this will move slowly and not fast. There are moments of reflection and difficult conversations. All this cannot be done if things are moving at a fast pace. If you are someone who likes to watch shows at a fast pace, then The Map of Longing might take a detour for you here.

There are so many themes that show covers such as romantic love, family bonds, friendship, and learning to love oneself again. Anyone who has been grappling with these feelings, especially grief, will find the plot quite relatable. That’s the beauty of The Map of Longing. The writing is so subtle yet so mature; all of it will make you want to watch it. So if you want to watch something serious for the weekend, this is your watch.
