Set in the backdrop of what seems to be any other ordinary residential complex, Light to the Night deals with the case of disappearance that will keep you hooked all through its run time. In the year 1997, Detective He Yuanhang, along with his apprentice Ran Fangxu, is called upon to investigate the disappearance of a father-daughter duo from the Xu family. The two were last seen stepping into an elevator in Yuanlongli, never to be seen again. There were no signs of struggles, no witnesses to watch, nothing. Just a case of vanishing into thin air. The full story unfolds across three distinct timelines—1997, 2006, and 2018—each one peeling back ever deeper, more intricate layers of the mystery, revealing hidden truths and unexpected connections that reshape everything we thought we knew about the case. At its core burns the haunting question: who is truly behind this shadowy orchestration, and what twisted motives could drive someone to go to such extraordinary, calculated lengths?
What stands out in the Who series is not just one thing, but many. For example, the plot. That is the foremost eye-catching thing. Right from the first episode itself, there is a lot of suspense created throughout that makes you want to watch the whole thing without ever feeling the need to fast forward anything. That, for me, was one of the best things that I felt was good. The execution has been done in a meticulous manner. Across all three timelines, everything works out perfectly. There is no confusion created in the plot that makes you feel that you are getting confused in between. It clearly shows that the makers have put in efforts to actually ensure that the audience gets the whole point that they are trying to make. If you are a mystery lover, Light to the Night is definitely something you will enjoy.
Other than that, the pacing is beautifully made to be even. Not once will you feel as if the plot has rushed anywhere. It follows an even pace all in all. So what happens is that you get to watch and understand the whole point of the plot. Never is it rushed, nor does the plot slow down. This makes the entire viewing experience wholesome.
Even with all this, we cannot help but think about what the cast that made the entire Light to the Night successful. Pan Yueming as He Yuanhang steals the show. He appears not to be highly intelligent. Yet, one can see how amazingly and tactfully he tries to solve the entire case with whatever information he knows. Across the three timelines, the character development of He Yuanhang is worth noting as well.
Other than this, Dylan Wang does a great job in his role as Ran Fangxu, who comes across as someone who is deeply invested in the whole case but is equally impatient. That also works well in the whole thing, as he is shown to be the exact opposite of He Yuanhang. Hence, by getting such characters, the makers have ensured that there is some sort of contrast. So all in all, Light to the Night is a great watch. All episodes have not come out yet; however, the show is in its final leg. Hence, this is the right to watch and enjoy.
Final Score- [8/10]
