This is the kind of storytelling that grabs your whole attention. Trust Me: The False Prophet tells us the story of cult expert Christine Marie and her husband, Tolga Katas, who were a part of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (FLDS). They target Samuel Batemana, a self-proclaimed prophet who has exploited his authority and abused many of his followers, but mostly the underage girls. However, in order to get evidence against him, they must become a part of everything authentically in order to ensure that no suspension is raised against them. In this process, we get to see some real-life footage captured live by Christine Marie and her husband, Tolga Katas. This adds a layer of authenticity to the whole docuseries. This also means that we get to witness the crime unfold right in front of our very own eyes. We see everything, from the time the trust is built among the followers to the time the exploitation takes place.

In between the whole thing, you cannot help but feel disgusted with Samuel Batemana. As someone who is supposed to be a preacher of god, getting to see the crimes he commits makes you question everything so far. We are also shown the survivors of his crime, such as Nomz and Julia, who open up about their horrific experiences and how they left an impact on them. What is strange is the fact that, in between all this, there is a sense of loyalty they have towards their abuser, and that is what forces you to think about the impression an abuser can leave on the victims. It tells us that somewhere, it is the system that gives a man the power to do the unimaginable.

What sets Trust Me: The False Prophet apart is the fact that there is absolutely no over hyping of the incident. It is presented to us with utmost seriousness and also makes us understand the gravity of the situation. Their main focus continues to be on the victims and their mental state instead of dramatizing the whole narrative. It is in these moments that you realize that a lot of effort has been put into giving us Trust Me: The False Prophet.

In some places, the narrative requires you to pay full attention in order to understand what exactly is happening. This isn’t a plot where you can just watch something randomly and also gain an understanding of what happened. Hence, watch it only when you have both time and attention to give. Otherwise, you will not understand the gravity of the whole situation that Trust Me: The False Prophet tries to show us or the story is telling.

However, I issue a fair warning, which I do for docusries such as these. The plot has content that can deeply trigger someone who has had similar experiences. So watch at your own risk. If you can handle such heavy things without getting triggered, feel free to watch. Otherwise, it is best to always choose one’s own mental health over things like these.

Final Score- [8/10]
