Yes, knowledge comes at a cost. That's what this episode tells the residents of the town. Is it just a warning or something more? Jade certainly believes it. He links it to the discovery made by him and Tabitha about how they keep coming back to this place again and again to save the children who are already dead. Jade is sure that this knowledge came at the cost of Jim's life.
The second episode of the penultimate season opens with Kenny waking up from his sleep to find out Sophia is missing from the clinic - she is not inside but roaming outside. Kenny quickly pulls her back inside and warns her about the consequences of going outside in the middle of the night. Sophia was sobbing and told Kenny that her father was dead. Little did Kenny know that Sophia was the one who made Father see the light.
The second episode, titled "Fray," is all about a heartbreaking and gruesome discovery - Julie and Ethan found their father in the barn hanging upside down with his chest completely open and neck slashed, but still attached. The morning started at the Colony House, where Boyd pulled Elgin aside and warned him to stick strictly to the story: he’d hurt his eye while saving Fatima. If Elgin opened his mouth and said anything else, the consequences would be brutal—and deadly. As Boyd headed into town, he noticed a heavy sack dangling from a pole, blood steadily dripping from it. It was hanging right outside Tabitha’s house. Jim’s family froze in terror, certain the sack contained his body. But when they looked inside, they realized it was only the butchered pieces of a goat. Still fearing the worst, Tabitha had already told Julie and Ethan to leave the place. Yet somehow, the two of them ended up in a place Tabitha never could have imagined.
The news of Jim’s death spread like wildfire through the town, plunging everyone into panic. Acosta desperately tried to escape in the ambulance while Boyd and the others fought to stop him. Meanwhile, Tabitha frantically scrubbed the barn wall where Jim’s body had been discovered—still bearing the chilling message “Knowledge Comes at a Cost.” Jade, seeking answers about what comes next, tracked down Tabitha to talk. At the same time, Julie had returned to the ruins once again, hoping to walk back into the past and see her father one more time.
Overall, the episode has a clear direction, but it doesn’t bring anything new to the table. The characters continue making frustratingly stupid decisions, Sophia seems to be blindly trusted by everyone, and Boyd is still scrambling to figure out what has changed. Last episode, we saw Tabitha’s house shaking, yet this one gave us zero answers about it. Sophia’s father is dead, but the others are acting like he’s just sleeping peacefully in bed. I could understand if no one knew, but Sophia already told Kenny, Mari checked his pulse, and Kristi, Acosta, and Sara were all right there. Maybe I’m wrong—perhaps Jim’s death has shaken everyone so badly that they’ve completely forgotten they still need to investigate another dead person who was perfectly fine (at least physically) the night before.
The episode ended mysteriously. Ethan was able to talk to his father - a shadow or memory. Jim tells him to remember the dream he had when they arrived in the town. Ethan remembers the lake of towers as Jim asks him to find it in this place. "The Lake of Tears" seems to be the next puzzle that this season will try to resolve. Ethan is the key, but let's see who else will believe and join him.
Final Score - [7/10]
